Kankakee Community College is addressing dating violence through a “Red Flag” awareness campaign beginning the week of Sept. 30. 

A variety of events are scheduled to encourage friends and other community members to “say something” when they see warning signs of dating violence. The Red Flag Campaign events are open to the public.

Monday, Sept. 30, noon - 1 p.m. in the KCC Iroquois Room (Room D152) – Harbor House Executive Director Jenny Schoenwetter will present “Dating Violence: How it Impacts you.” Learn about dating violence, red flags to watch for, how to help a friend in an abusive relationship, and more. Refreshments will be available. 

Tuesday, Oct. 1, noon - 1 p.m. in KCC Conference Hall (Room D140) – Kankakee County State’s Attorney Jim Rowe; Kankakee County Center Against Sexual Assault (KC-CASA) representative Kerrie Blanton; and Harbor House representatives will conduct a Domestic Violence Panel Discussion covering various cases. There will be time for questions. Refreshments will be available.

Wednesday, Oct. 2 is “Wear Red Day” staff & students are encouraged to wear red in support of Domestic Violence Awareness.

Wednesday, Oct. 2 noon - 1 p.m. in KCC Room D152, Kankakee County Center Against Sexual Assault (KC-CASA) presents "Bringing in the Bystander." This program emphasizes bystander intervention & the skills needed to play a role in ending dating violence.

Thursday, Oct. 3, noon - 2 p.m. in the KCC Auditorium (Room L110) a movie showing of “A Better Man” and discussion to follow. “The film A Better Man offers a fresh and nuanced look at the healing and revelation that can happen for everyone involved when men take responsibility for their abuse,” according to the film’s website. “It also empowers audience members to play new roles in challenging domestic violence, whether it’s in their own relationships or as part of a broader movement for social change.” Harbor House and KC-CASA representatives will lead a discussion after the film. Refreshments will be available.
