GED & ESL now offered Saturdays

Kankakee Community College’s Department of Adult and Community Education is adding Saturday classes for GED preparation and English as a Second Language.

All KCC Adult Education classes are free. The new Saturday classes begin Aug. 22, and meet from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at KCC, 100 College Drive in Kankakee. Other daytime and evening GED and English as a Second Language classes begin the week of Aug. 17 in Kankakee. Bradley, Momence and Watseka also offer KCC Adult Education courses.

KCC is the largest provider of precollege and remedial services in the Kankakee and Iroquois county area. Basic literacy and English as a Second Language courses are also offered. Literacy programs are held at numerous sites where a tutor and student meet at times convenient to both.

“Adult education is about creating opportunities,” said Shannan Carrell, director of Adult and Community Education at KCC. “Our classes are free, and we provide the support students need to succeed. Whether someone wants to earn a high school diploma, improve their English skills, or prepare for college or a new career, we’re here to help them take that first step.”

“Completing a GED can make a real difference in someone’s life,” said Charlotte Kramer, coordinator of GED programs at KCC. “Beyond increasing earning potential, it builds confidence and opens the door to college, workforce training, and careers that may not have been possible before.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for those with a high school diploma is lower than it is for people with no high school degree.
