Calvin-Edwards gets sergeant's stripes

The coordinator of KCC's Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice programs has earned another title: sergeant on the Kankakee Police Department.

Melvina Calvin-Edwards, Ed.D., is the first African-American woman to become a sergeant on the City of Kankakee police force. Her new rank was recognized during the Kankakee City Council meeting on Jan. 21.

Calvin-Edwards has been teaching at KCC since 2012, in addition to being a full-time police officer. In August 2024, she became a full-time professor and coordinator for KCC's Law Enforcement & Criminal Justice programs.

At KCC, Calvin-Edwards teaches courses including Introduction to Criminal Justice, Basic Criminal Law, Criminal Investigation, Juvenile Delinquency, Organization & Administration, Crisis and Conflict Resolution.

Calvin-Edwards attended KCC. She a bachelor's degree and doctorate from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, as well as a master's degree from Governors State University in University Park.
