Video lectures for Fall 2019

A fall series of video lectures at Kankakee Community College features experts in a range of cultural and historically significant subjects. 

“8 Books That Changed the World” will delve into the the Bible, Homer’s Odyssey, Dante’s Divine Comedy, Shakespeare’s Hamlet,  Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse, Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, Harper Lee’s To Kill  A Mockingbird and Joseph Heller’s Catch 22. Explore the creative processes behind these masterpieces, trace their impact and develop reading skills to release their remarkable riches. Meets Thursday, Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. at KCC in Room D123. Lecturer is Joseph Luzzi. 

“What Makes Great Movies Great?” will cover how great films take on the toughest issues and most provocative themes, hoping to eloquently bring them to life on the screen. This presentation illustrates examples of cinematic mastery and showcases film and clips with some of the most memorable moments and performances ever captured. Meets Thursday, Oct. 17 form 9-11:30 a.m. at KCC in Room D124. Lecturer is Marc Lapadula.

“Future of Digital: Amazon, Apple, Facebook & Google” is a roundup of leaders in the race for digital dominance. This presentation will offer insights on who will thrive or die in the digital age. Insights into assumptions about where the world is headed next will be shared. Meets Thursday, Oct. 24 from 9-11:30 a.m. at KCC in Room D124. Lecturer is Scott Galloway.

“How the 1960s Shaped American Politics Today” shares how the 1960s spawned today’s polarization and culture wars. Many social issues started in the ’60s have shaped and influenced our country ever since. Meets Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 10:30 a.m.  - noon at KCC in Room D123. Lecturer is Leonard Steinhorn.

“1968: The Extraordinary Events of a Memorable Year” will reflect on a year that put a charge in the emerging culture war that would define American politics and culture for decades to come. Meets Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 1-2:30 p.m. at KCC in room D123. Lecturer is Leonard Steinhorn.

“The Art of Aging” reviews how biological, psychological, and social research have taught us about growing older. Common, uncommon and key components of successful aging will also be discussed. Meets Thursday, Nov. 14 from 10-11 a.m. at KCC in Room D124. Lecturer is Brian Carpenter.
“Climate Change, Nature, and the Environment: What We Know & What We Don’t” enlightens participants about facts from fictions, and physics certainties from feedback uncertainties. Every planet’s balance between the energy it receives and the energy it radiates back into space will be examined. Meets Wednesday, Nov. 20 from 9-11:30 a.m. at KCC in Room D123. Lecturer is David Helfand.

“Women of the American Revolution” will tell how women made boycotts of British import work. They took on responsibility of farm, shop and business. Women proved inventive in replacing missing supplies. Women also served as spies, couriers, and soldiers. Meets Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 9-11:30 a.m. at KCC in Room D123. Lecturer is Carol Berkin.
